The Do's and Don'ts of skin cleansing

by Juliie Williams |

Our skin regenerates every 28 days with skin cells living only a mere 2 -3 weeks. So it’s vital that we cleanse and exfoliate daily to help keep our top visible layer bright and fresh.

As with most things in life it’s important to make sure that you have the basics nailed before you move on to applying your skincare regime products. A simple wash and go will not serve your complexion well, especially if your twice a day cleanse isn’t properly removing make up and pollution residue.

According to skin care experts the most important starting point of your cleansing routine is getting the temperature right. Always use WARM water, never hot or cold. Hot water has the potential to upset the skin barrier function by inflaming and irritating the skin. Cold water however won’t have the softening affects needed to thoroughly remove make up residue. It is a total myth that hot water opens pores and cold water closes them.

Choose your cleanser carefully

No matter your skin type, whether you have sensitive, oily or dehydrated skin, a cleanser should be the first step in your regime to target your concerns. Certainly with oily skin it may seem sensible to go for astringent washes that will blitz the grease away, but the real issue is if you are too harsh on oily skin you will actually make the issue worse, as skin’s natural response when it is stripped is to just produce more oil. We’d recommend a kinder, calming wash which lifts excess oil from pores without leaving them dry or tight

Double Cleanse

Some people fear double cleansing has the potential to strip the skin of natural oils and result in impairing the skin barrier function, however this shouldn’t stop you. If you’re wearing a full face of make up each day, work in a polluted area or have oily/combination skin, double cleansing is an essential part of your evening regime.

The first cleanse removes makeup, pollutants and dirt from the day. The second cleanse removes the dead skin cells allowing the products you apply afterwards work all the more effectively.

If you have been a ‘face wipe’ user it could be time to break up with them. Although they are the easiest option, you have to question at what price to your skin ? The majority are loaded with chemicals which will no doubt dissolve your makeup, but surfactants and emulsifiers have a tendency to aggravate our skin, especially on mascara and around the delicate areas of our eyes.

Don’t Rush

Often we’re in a rush with our skincare at the end of the day, but it should be a time we slow down and enjoy. Once applied, spend at least a couple of minutes massaging your cleanser, not only will this ensure every last bit of makeup has been removed but also the movements across your skin will help lymphatic drainage to de-puff your face and improve circulation
